EOA webinar: understanding biomass - the importance of satellite-derived products and global collaboration

Presenter bios

Dr Clément Albinet has an Eng. Degree from École Centrale de Nantes, France (2008) and a M.Sc. degree from the University of Nantes, France (2008).

In 2009, he worked at CNES/CESBIO on the processing of P-Band airborne campaign data. From 2009 to 2012, he joined the Office National d’Etudes et de Recherches Aérospatiales (ONERA) and obtained a PhD degree on P-Band SAR instrumentation and data modelling.

Then he joined CNES/CESBIO where he worked for three years on the ESA BIOMASS mission and the ground-based SAR instrumentation.

Since 2015, Dr Albinet has been with the European Space Agency (ESA), in the Mission Management and Ground Segment Department of the Earth Observation Directorate. He works as a SAR expert on the BIOMASS and Sentinel-1 missions. In particular, he is supporting BIOMASS in the scientific activities of Level 2 and 3 algorithms definition, preparation of the Cal/Val activities, and the definition of the BIOMASS Mission Algorithm & Analysis Platform (MAAP), in cooperation with NASA.

Dr Fernando Camacho received a PhD from the University of Valencia (2004) with a thesis on operational retrieval of vegetation variables from remote sensing BRDF data. He developed the algorithms for LAI and FAPAR operational retrieval from Meteosat Second Generation (EUMETSAT). His main areas of research are BRDF, retrieval of bio-geophysical variables (LAI, FAPAR, CWC, Biomass) from satellite optical data, and validation of remote sensing products. He has been involved in many cal/val campaigns for ESA since 2000.

Since 2006 he has been Director of the Earth Observation Laboratory in the University of Valencia. His work mostly focusses on the validation and quality assessment of operational remote sensing land products (reflectance, albedo, vegetation), in particular for the Copernicus Global Land Service, Copernicus Climate Change Service, ESA and EUMETSAT. He has authored more than 25 peer-reviewed papers, and more than 100 conference papers. Currently, he acts as Vice Chair of the Land Product Validation subgroup of the CEOS Working Group on Calibration and Validation.
