Lachlan McKinna is a Satellite Oceanographer at Go2Q Pty Ltd on the Sunshine Coast who recently presented at our EOA Whole of Community Meeting on 12 August 2019.
Lachlan, in collaboration with Destination Gold Coast, has been invited to develop a bid to host the 2022 Ocean Optics Conference on the Gold Coast. Lachlan has reached out to the EOA Community to seek letters of support from Australia’s leading research institutes/organisations to include with his bid package.
As you may know, Ocean Optics is the premier scientific meeting on hydrologic optical theory and application. The meeting is convened by NASA and administered by The Oceanography Society, typically attracting 400+ international delegates for a week-long convention. Topics covered include: optical theory, remote sensing (passive and active), autonomous underwater/airborne systems, underwater vision, marine biogeochemistry, phytoplankton ecology, shallow water mapping and bathymetry, harmful algae blooms, water quality monitoring, and coastal ecosystem management. A number of relevant short training courses are also convened.
Ocean Optics attracts delegates from academia, government, military, industry, and international space agencies. The meeting is integral to global ocean colour, coastal, and inland water remote sensing communities yet has rarely been held outside Europe and North America (only once in its 48-year history). Bringing the meeting to the Gold Coast would be an exceptional opportunity to showcase Australia’s Earth observation (EO) capabilities.
Lachlan is requesting letters of support that:
demonstrate Australia has a strong EO research presence, and
the local EO community recognises the great mutual benefit of hosting Ocean Optics in Australia.
If your organisation is interested in supporting this unique opportunity, please provide a letter of support no later than 30 September 2019. For more information about the Ocean Optics Conference refer to the website.
If you have any questions please contact Go2Q who will be happy to assist and help outline requirements for your letter of support.
